Boys in Dance Also Need Proper Dancewear - Kakisky in Morguefile
For boys involved in dance activities, having proper dance clothing is an important consideration that contributes to their enjoyment and success.

When people think of dance classes, particularly for children, they usually think of girls in their ballet slippers, leotards, and tutus. However, many boys also enjoy dancing and learning formal dance moves through structured classes, and it is important for them to have proper dance clothing as well.

What to Look for in Boys' Dance Clothing

Aside from costumes required for performances, a boy's dance wardrobe should include t-shirts, pants, and proper dance shoes. When looking to buy dancewear for boys, style and fashion may play a role, but functionality is key, especially for workouts and rehearsals. Dancers put their bodies through a full range of movements and don't want to be restricted by their clothing. Look for clothing that is made of a material with some stretch or give to the fabric, such as Lycra or spandex.

Although it may cost a little more, choosing clothing made from good quality, technical fabric is also important so moisture is wicked away from the dancer's skin. Not only is feeling wet uncomfortable during workouts, but it can lead to rashes and other skin irritations. The fit of dance clothing is also an important consideration. Boys' dancewear should fit snugly, but not be stretched so tightly that fabric is thin and transparent. Overly stretched clothing is uncomfortable to wear and more restrictive of movement than dancewear that is properly fitted.

Other Dance Accessories for Boys

In addition to clothing for dance, more serious male dancers may want to consider a dance belt. This device is similar to a jock strap and is used to prevent injuries and the embarrassment of wearing tights. A dance belt is worn under clothing and has a protective cup that fits over male genitalia for protection and to reduce visible exposure. Unlike a typical jock strap used for other sports, the dance belt has a thong-style strap at the back to eliminate strap lines. The belt is also usually worn tighter to virtually eliminate movement of the genitalia. There are several colors and styles of dance belts to choose from and although they all generally do the job, some boys may find one style more comfortable or have a color preference.

Dance is not just for girls. Boys play an important role in dance performance and can enjoy this activity as much or more than girls. If your son is interested in dance, professionally or as a pastime, encourage him by ensuring he has the proper equipment and clothing. Although there seems to be a plethora of dance workout clothing available for girls, there are some good options for boys as well.
